From fields to fashion, from meadows to motoring: how the leather industry is crafting a more sustainable future
Speaker: Kevin Latner (LHCA, Leather and Hide Council of America)
GREEN Theatre (Hall. 9, V29-Z30)
Open event, English language
Description: The now discredited, synthetic-industry funded, Higg Index of environmental performance for materials, is under close scrutiny.  With a lack of transparency on data and process, and taking no view on the end use of materials, leather has performed badly – with environmental excellence apparently only available from plastics.  As businesses and consumers around the world look to a more sustainable future, the leather supply chain is embarking on a radical program to collate, quantify, monitor, report and verify its environmental impacts.  The ambition? A  robust, independent and credible cradle-to-grave lifecycle assessment, available to all. The results will not only establish a real world perspective on the benefits of leather as a natural material – but will also enable the industry to understand where its future sustainability focus should lie.  Find out more about the program today.
